History

Historic photographs cover 5 decades of leather designs created by Jackie Robbins Leather Waves of Malibu California. When Leather Waves Officially opened it’s doors in 1975, Leather was still a hard thick material with limited use in fashion. Jackie Robbins wanted to follow the “Hippie Representation” of the material used in the 1960’s, by a more sophisticated fashion approach. You will see a progressive use of different materials in unique combinations, as leather became more pliable and softened in it’s flow and appeal. These changes in the market complimented some of the best selling designs. The “Western”, “Safari”, “Bolero”, “Cocoon Wrap”, “Slacks”, “Topcoat”, “Decorated Denim”, “Motorcycle”, “Rock and Roll”, “Designer Chic”, “Vintage”,”Bohemian or Bo-Ho” are some of the trends explored. These photos represent some favorite and most popular designs, modeled sometimes by kind clients and patrons, friends of Leather Waves, and favorite Muses. If any designs interest you from these individual decades photo’s, please contact us for more information. New renditions and revivals of past design concepts are available for purchase.

2010’s

Recovering from a wildfire in 2007 that burned the entire studio down, I full filled custom orders for my loyal clientele that followed me to temporary spaces while rebuilding. The Leather Waves Jewelbox morphed into The Resurrection Gallery and Studio and re-opened in 2011 in the same location. More of my fine artwork and photography was added to show and sell along with my continued passion for creating Leather garments and accessories. Modern and contemporary clean lines dominate the design process. Combining patterns and colors and juxtaposing bits of other materials becomes interesting in new ways. I launch a new label and ‘No-Animal’ Leather line using faux leather and suede for our growing vegan clientele. There is a renewed ‘earthiness’ in color that is reminiscent to me of the 1960’s. New uses of decorations that move and create a sexy flow are finding their way onto many styles. “Skinny” lines in the design of all garments are popular and define shape and body definition. Cross-gender dressing is more often seen, and gives us all more options and choices.

Babe

Leather Waves Babe, was a line of children’s clothing I started in 2000. It was modeled after my daughter and her friends that grew up in Malibu. A limited special edition, wholesale version, of the line was sold in several Los Angeles boutiques, as well as Leather Waves in Malibu thru 2005. I have always enjoyed and have had many requests to make leather clothing in small enough sizes to fit all the amazing children I have known. It has always been fun to dress my small friends just like I have dressed my adult clients. I consider my children’s custom leather and suede clothing one of my specialities.
